A voyage of discovery..

This morning, due largely to the initiatives of Gerhard and Jesse, the Club ran a small Discover Scuba session at the pool. Many thanks to Dianne, Todd and Adam, who supported the activity and made it fun for the 5 participants.

We'll judge the value of the morning by the number of candidates who eventually take training with us, but it's always a good thing for our sport if people are exposed to it and come away with a smile on their face....

Final Basic Course Cancelled...

Recent announcements that the pool at the KMCSC will be closed for much of October have made it necessary to cancel the final basic course scheduled to be run by the Club this year. This is unfortunate, but we are very lucky to have the facilities at KMCSC and occasional upsets to our plans (and theirs) are just a fact of life.

Please encourage anyone you know, who is going to miss this course, to keep in touch with the Club over the 'closed' season and to enrol in next year's courses early.

Pool Night attracts a large turnout...

The first pool night of the Winter proved popular - despite - or perhaps because of - its proximity to the festive season. Fourteen people used the session to try out equipment, techniques or just to get wet at a time of greater diving challenges outdoors. At least one Discover Scuba session was completed and Kenn Feigleman of Deep Quest 2, a friend of Adam's, who will join the Club in 2008, was able to show members a High Definition video setup in its top-of-the-line Amphibico housing. A Sealife DC600 still camera was also in use and pictures should be available before long.

For those who were unable to make this session, but who want to make the next ones, they will take place on Saturday January 12th and Saturday February 9th next year.

You might have wondered....

just what happens in June, when the pool at the KMCSC is closed. The answer is that the whole facility gets a really good clean. To comply with relevant legislation, the pool must be completely scrubbed down annually. All the contact surfaces are sterilized and any routine maintenance work is completed while access can be achieved. A good example is the exchange of all the high-powered overhead lights. These cannot be accessed while the pool is in use, so the likelihood of failure is reduced by an early change of lamps. All the stainless steel fixtures are removed and transported to an off-site facility for deep cleaning. The maintenance staff, whom we all recognise and respect for their excellent work, put in long hours going over all the pool margins, cleaning them meticulously. A small team of lifeguards assists with this work. When we regain access to the facility in July, just have a look at the pool surrounds and see how very clean and well cared for they are. And when you see the maintenance staff - consider congratulating them on a job very well done - year round...
